The Seven Characteristics of a Proper Student

by
Dr. Makia L. Pai

     1. Humility - The proper student knows that the depth of the art is deeper than he will ever know.

     2. Perseverance - The proper student tries to learn it anyway and never quits.

     3. Sincerity - The proper student learns and follows the etiquette to the best of his ability out of his love for the art.

     4. Selflessness - The proper student puts the art, his school, his teacher, and the other students above himself.

     5. Intelligence - The proper student is not a mindless zombie, but uses intellect and reason to apply what he is taught in all areas of his life.

     6. Self-discipline - The proper student practices everyday, no matter what, all aspects of the art and lives up to the moral precepts of the art in every situation.

     7. Adaptability - The proper student allows the art to change him and his teacher to mold him.  He is not fixed on his current level of understanding and ability, but embraces the changes that come on a daily basis on every level.
